Franchises I had always trusted for good times failed to turn up or were very disappointing (Mega Man, Castlevania, etc). Many of these games were early in the systems life cycle, or they were never really followed up in a satisfying way. But for me this was the beginning of the decline for games, and this list kind of shows why. That game is quite good and old fashioned in a way that I appreciate. I would add Contra Shattered Soldier to the list, especially for those interested in retro games. That is game is fantastic and it seems like most people don’t know about it. We love it for its unabashed immaturity and grotesquery (impaling the Hydra on a ship’s mast, anyone?), and for how this first entry formed the foundation for what would later become one of Sony’s blockbuster, must-play series. God of War combined a perfect blend of combo-heavy action, puzzles, and platforming as Kratos fought his way through Athens, the Underworld, and rode the back of Cronos (of whom he’d brutally kill in a later game). Equal parts violent and cinematic, this was where we were first introduced to Kratos and his quest for revenge against Ares for orchestrating the murder of his family by his own hand. Santa Monica Studio’s violent, ever-present console seller got its start on the PS2 with the first God of War.
